A peaceful afternoon walk turned into a nightmare on the Ohlone Greenway in El Cerrito when a woman was viciously attacked from behind — and nearly left for dead.
It happened around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, near Wall Avenue. A 38-year-old San Pablo woman, later identified as Dakauna Buckley, allegedly walked up to a woman strolling southbound on the trail and struck her in the back of the head with a large metal wrench.
The attack didn’t stop there. Buckley allegedly continued beating the victim on the side of her face, leaving her with severe lacerations to her head and face — and knocking out several of her teeth.
Once the victim was on the ground, the suspect grabbed her purse and fled.
What happened next is nothing short of remarkable. Despite her serious injuries, the victim somehow got back on her feet and made her way to a nearby restaurant to get help. A witness there spotted the suspect attempting to hide in nearby bushes and immediately called 911.
Richmond Police officers arrived first on scene and quickly located the victim, who — even in her condition — was able to point officers directly to where the suspect was hiding. When officers moved in, Buckley ran. A short foot chase followed, but she was taken into custody without further incident.
The victim was rushed to a local trauma center for treatment.
El Cerrito Police are still investigating and are asking anyone with information to call (510) 215-4435 or email [email protected].
