LAREDO, Texas — A convenience store trip turned violent last month when a Laredo man allegedly used cases of beer as a weapon against a woman who tried to stop him from walking out without paying.
It happened around 11 p.m. on April 14 at a convenience store on the 2700 block of North Arkansas Avenue — and the whole thing was caught on surveillance camera.
What went down that night
A 38-year-old woman noticed a man heading toward the exit carrying two cases of beer. Something felt off. She stepped in front of the door and simply asked him — was he planning to pay for those?
That question apparently didn’t sit well with him.
The man, identified as 42-year-old Roberto Armando Valverde, allegedly shoved the beer cases into the woman, causing minor injuries. He then dropped the merchandise and ran out of the store.
How police caught him
Investigators pulled surveillance footage from the store and were able to identify Valverde from the video. He wasn’t arrested that night — but he couldn’t hide forever.
On May 20, Valverde was served with an arrest warrant and taken into custody. He was booked into Webb County Jail, where he remained as of Thursday morning.
The charges he’s facing
Valverde now faces two charges connected to the incident:
- Robbery — a second-degree felony
- Theft of property valued between $100 and $750
His bonds total $53,000.
A robbery charge over two cases of beer — and it all started because one woman decided to speak up.
