Six Dead In Muscatine Domestic Shooting Spree; Suspect Found Deceased

MUSCATINE, IA – A small east-central Iowa community is mourning after a suspected gunman killed six people in a series of shootings across multiple locations before taking his own life on Monday, June 1.

Tragedy Unfolds Near The Riverfront

The Muscatine County Joint Communications Center received the initial emergency call at approximately 12:12 p.m. reporting a shooting at a residence near the Mississippi River.

Upon arrival, Muscatine Police officers and emergency medical personnel discovered four victims deceased from apparent gunshot wounds inside the home.

Suspect Located On Riverfront Trail

The suspect, identified by authorities as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland, fled the residence before law enforcement arrived.

Following a brief active investigation that prompted officials to close off portions of Park Avenue and the riverfront, officers located McFarland on the Riverfront Trail near the pedestrian bridge. According to police, McFarland died at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Additional Victims Discovered

As detectives expanded their preliminary investigation, they uncovered information leading them to two additional crime scenes:

  • Second Residence: Officers discovered a fifth male victim deceased inside a home located about two miles away from the initial scene.
  • Local Business: A sixth male victim was found dead at a business establishment near the second residence.

Domestic Dispute Cited As Motive

The Muscatine Police Department confirmed that preliminary findings indicate the shooting spree stemmed from a domestic-related dispute. Investigators believe all six victims were family members of the deceased suspect.

“Today, I simply do not have the words — this act of evil and what it has done to our community,” Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies stated during a press briefing, confirming there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The identities of the victims are being withheld pending formal notification of next of kin. Chief Kies noted that McFarland had a prior criminal record but declined to share further specifics.

Investigation Ongoing

Multiple agencies are assisting local police with the massive investigation, including the Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Authorities are actively processing the three distinct crime scenes and interviewing witnesses. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the Muscatine Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit.
