He Was Just Standing on the Street. Then a Van Slammed Into Him — and the Driver Ran

A 75-year-old man is dead after a driver lost control of a van, crushed him between two parked cars, and then fled the scene on foot.

The crash happened just after 10:30 p.m. Saturday at South 11th and Federal streets. Police say a white 2013 Ford F-250 was heading northbound when the driver lost control and slammed into a parked Chevrolet Express van.

The victim, John McDermott of Philadelphia, had been standing between the two legally parked vehicles when the collision occurred. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but did not survive.

Surveillance video captured the moment of the crash. The driver reportedly tried to help McDermott before giving up and running away southbound on South 11th Street, then turning east onto Latona Street.
