PENSACOLA, Florida — A 23-year-old Pensacola man is behind bars after investigators say he ran a red light at high speed and slammed into a pregnant woman’s car — killing her unborn child.

Nickolas Bolton was arrested on May 29 by the Pensacola Police Department’s traffic homicide unit. He faces charges of manslaughter and reckless driving.

What Happened on March 18

The crash occurred at the intersection of Ninth Avenue and Bayou Boulevard.

According to a PPD release, Bolton was driving a pickup truck southbound on Ninth Avenue at a high rate of speed when he ran the red light at Bayou Boulevard.

His truck slammed into the side of a car being driven by a pregnant woman — a violent T-bone collision that left her vehicle severely damaged.

Mother Survived. Her Baby Did Not.

The pregnant woman was taken to a medical facility following the crash.

Doctors determined her injuries were non-life-threatening.

But her unborn child was pronounced dead by medical personnel at the scene.

The loss of the baby prompted PPD investigators to open a traffic homicide investigation, which ultimately led to Bolton’s arrest more than two months after the crash.

Charges and Bond

Bolton was booked into the Escambia County Jail on May 29.

He is currently held on a $30,000 bond.

The manslaughter charge reflects the legal weight Florida places on crashes that result in the death of an unborn child due to another driver’s reckless actions.

A Community Left With Questions

Intersections like Ninth Avenue and Bayou Boulevard see heavy daily traffic.

For many Pensacola residents, this crash is a sobering reminder of what can happen in a single second when a driver chooses speed over safety.
