A routine Thursday evening ride turned fatal in St. Croix County after a teenage driver’s turn placed her directly in the path of an oncoming motorcycle.
The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office received a call at approximately 4:45 p.m. Thursday reporting a two-vehicle crash on the 2200 block of 90th Avenue in Baldwin Township.
According to authorities, a 16-year-old girl from Baldwin was driving a Pontiac Vibe eastbound on 90th Avenue when she attempted a left-hand turn — directly into the path of a westbound motorcycle.
The motorcyclist, identified as 57-year-old Darin S. Ofstie of Baldwin, took the full force of the collision.
Ofstie was airlifted from the scene to Regions Hospital with critical injuries. He died later that evening.
Investigators noted that 90th Avenue has no stop signs or traffic control devices for drivers traveling in either direction — meaning neither vehicle was required to stop before the point of impact.
Ofstie was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The teenage driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries. She was wearing a seatbelt.
The crash remains under investigation by the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office.
