KILLEEN, Texas — A tragic head-on collision in Killeen claimed the lives of two people and left another seriously injured Monday morning, according to local authorities.
The crash occurred around 7:40 a.m. in the 700 block of East Stan Schlueter Loop, between Trimmier Road and Velma Drive.
Investigators said a 2024 Toyota SUV traveling westbound crossed into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a 2016 Kia SUV.
The driver of the Toyota, identified as 41-year-old Andre Richmond, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Gregory Johnson.
Emergency crews transported both occupants of the Kia SUV to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center for treatment. Authorities said the passenger, 73-year-old Rosa Hernandez, later died from her injuries at the hospital.
The driver of the Kia, a 77-year-old man, survived the crash and remains hospitalized. Police said his condition has improved and he is currently listed as serious but stable.
The collision temporarily disrupted traffic in the area as investigators worked to document the scene and gather evidence.
Officials are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash. Detectives are examining whether impairment may have been a contributing factor.
An autopsy has been ordered for Richmond as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities said the examination will be conducted at a forensic facility in Dallas.
