Review: Where can you find the best donuts in the metro area?

Donuts are one of many fine American delicacies, invented in New York, but unfortunately not even there can you find a decent donut. I feel pity for the uncultured tongues of most of you that find places like Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme to even resemble good donuts.

There are many different donuts that should only be referred to as do-not’s. The question comes to mind of what is actually good. Of all the choices, where are the best donuts?

Krispy Kreme

First we have Krispy Kreme. It was an interesting experience to say the least. Never before in my life have I thought I put soft cardboard in my mouth, on accident that is, and yet here I am, tasting something so dry and tasteless I want to break my personal code of never spitting anything out. Beyond the sad and very much so questionable “bread” of their donuts that somehow manages to capture the likes of your kitchen sponge, the frosting has to be purely intended for texture rather than flavor; I fail to find its taste throughout the whole donut at all, almost like it abandoned the rest of the donut early on. I am unsure how they manage to remove the sugar and flavor from frosting/glazing, both of which are essentially pure sugar. Krispy Kreme was a regretful experience. Two words, do better.

Hurts Donuts

Hurts Donuts was better than expected. They are rather popular and seem to keep a good atmosphere. Their donuts, on the other hand, were average at best. Having an excellent presentation on their donuts can’t save them from their breading being a tad bit more rubbery than I would have liked in a donut with decent frosting. Overall, not much to be said. It was actually decent but not as desirable to go out of your way to experience it.

Dunkin Donuts

While being a donut and coffee place Dunkin Donuts failed so horribly that I simply lack the words to describe it, 0/10 overall poor quality. I couldn’t tell if it was frosting or dry water on those donuts, but bonus for trying and getting a good amount of frosting on the donut. I would not want to go again, but it wasn’t the worst option out there.

Sunrize Donuts

Although far from home, Sunrize Donuts deserves its place among the donut hall of fame. Located in Omaha just off of Q Street, they remain the only donut place around that has genuinely delicious donuts, from the fresh fluffy breading to the delightful frosting. Their real donuts succeeded in comparison to the many places that failed to meet the standard, managing to set the bar so low that I would simply be astonished if the frosting and other toppings taste, well, exactly the way anyone should expect it to. I can confidently say that Sunrize Donuts would have been the best even if the others hired the likes of a master chef to save their sad attempts at donuts, Sunrize would remain at the very top. Simply amazing overall. Out of all the different places, Sunrize would be the only one to earn my personal recommendations to go out and try. I’m always hungry for more, but unfortunately humans need a balanced diet.

For any one who likes donuts or is looking for them, it’s completely clear that Sunrize is the place to go for tasty, consistent quality donuts.
