5 People Stabbed at Penn Station — Suspect in Custody as NYC Reels From Sunday Night Attack

NEW YORK, New York — One of the busiest train stations in America turned into a crime scene Sunday night when a suspect attacked multiple commuters with a knife inside Penn Station.

The New York City Fire Department received the first call just after 7 p.m. on June 7.

By the time first responders arrived, five people had been stabbed inside the massive Manhattan transit hub.

What We Know About the Victims

One person suffered serious injuries. Two others had moderate injuries, and two more had minor injuries.

All five were rushed to Bellevue Hospital for treatment.

Amtrak Police confirmed all five were in stable condition.

A sixth victim was separately transported to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Their condition was not immediately known.

Suspect Taken Into Custody at the Scene

Amtrak Police said a person of interest was arrested at Penn Station before officers left the scene.

Investigators also recovered a knife.

Law enforcement officials told multiple outlets that the suspect is believed to have mental health issues.

Governor Hochul Responds

New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued a statement Sunday night, calling the attack senseless.

“Tonight, five people were senselessly attacked at Penn Station in an act of horrific violence,” she said.

“New Yorkers deserve to feel safe wherever they go, and we will never stop working to make that a reality,” Hochul added.

Commuters Warned to Avoid the Area

Notify NYC posted an alert on social media warning commuters to expect traffic delays, road closures, mass transit disruptions, and a heavy emergency personnel presence near Penn Station.

Residents were advised to avoid the area entirely.

Attack Comes One Day Before Trump’s Visit to MSG

The stabbing happened just one night before President Donald Trump was scheduled to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden — which sits directly above Penn Station.

Security measures around the venue were already elevated ahead of the President’s visit.

Attendees were instructed to arrive at least two hours before the 8:40 p.m. tipoff, bring as little as possible, and prepare for TSA-style screening at the entrance due to a strict no-bag policy.

Penn Station serves as one of New York City’s most critical transit points, connecting intercity rail lines and multiple subway routes that millions of commuters use every week.
