San Jose Target Stops Selling Food Due To Rat Infestation

SAN JOSE, CA – A major Target store in San Jose has been forced to pull all food items from its shelves after a county health inspection revealed a severe pest problem.

Food Shelves Empty and Blocked Off

The Target location situated near North Capitol Avenue and McKee Road has blocked off entire sections of the store. Shoppers arriving at the location will find that all grocery and food items have been completely removed.

Other non-food departments inside the retail store remain open to the public.

Health Department Finds Rat Droppings

According to Santa Clara County health records, the store was officially ordered to close all food-related areas on Friday.

An inspector discovered rat droppings scattered throughout the food warehouse and noted visible chewing marks on multiple food packages, prompting the immediate health enforcement action.

Target Issues Official Statement

Target corporate officials confirmed the temporary shutdown of their grocery section in a statement, emphasizing that guest safety is their highest priority:

“We’ve temporarily stopped selling food items at our San Jose Capitol store to allow for cleaning and sanitizing, following reports of pest activity in this location. Additionally, we’re working with the local health department to ensure the concern is addressed quickly.”

Target apologized for the inconvenience and directed local shoppers to visit their nearby location at 1750 Story Road for their grocery needs.

Timeline for Reopening Unclear

Management has not yet confirmed an exact date for when food items will return to the store shelves. The grocery areas will remain closed until the local health department conducts a follow-up inspection and verifies that the infestation has been fully resolved.
