A Pasco man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he forced a cattle-hauling semi-truck to stop on Highway 395, drove away with the vehicle, and later demanded money for the livestock’s return.
Clemente G. Esquivel, 46, was arrested following the May 27 incident and has been charged with first-degree theft, second-degree extortion, and reckless driving. Court records show he was later released after posting a $10,000 bond.
According to investigators, the incident began around 9:30 a.m. when Esquivel was driving a Ford F-150 northbound on Highway 395. Authorities allege he crossed the highway median and began traveling south before pulling in front of a semi-truck transporting cattle.
Investigators say Esquivel repeatedly braked in front of the truck, attempting to force the driver to pull over. The truck driver eventually exited the highway and stopped near Booker Auction on Eltopia West Road, approximately 20 miles north of Pasco.
After both vehicles stopped, a confrontation reportedly took place. Authorities say Esquivel approached the driver, shouting and demanding $20,000 in exchange for the cattle.
The truck driver attempted to return to the vehicle, but investigators allege Esquivel prevented him from doing so and climbed into the driver’s seat. Fearing the situation could escalate, the driver stepped back while Esquivel drove away with the truck and livestock.
Court documents state that Esquivel later recorded a video message in which he allegedly repeated his demand for $20,000 to return the cattle.
While officers were interviewing the truck driver, Esquivel reportedly returned to the area and spoke with investigators.
During the investigation, Esquivel told officers that he believed the truck belonged to his wife and said he had recognized it while driving on the highway. He also acknowledged that the cattle driver had previously been permitted to use the truck.
Authorities have not publicly clarified the nature of the dispute that led to the incident. The case remains under investigation.
