UNIVERSAL CITY, Texas — A teenage girl in Texas allegedly turned online dating apps into a hunting ground — using fake meet-ups to lead unsuspecting boys straight into her boyfriend’s ambush.
Alyssa Canul, 17, now faces two counts of aggravated robbery and could face an additional charge of tampering with physical evidence, according to officials in Universal City, Texas.
Authorities say Canul partnered with her boyfriend, 17-year-old Joseph Anthony Aguilar, to carry out the scheme.
How the Trap Was Set
The pair had recently moved to Universal City when the alleged attacks took place.
Canul’s role, according to investigators, was simple and calculated — match with young men on online dating apps, build just enough trust, and then invite them to meet in person.
What the victims did not know was that her boyfriend was waiting.
In the first incident, Canul allegedly invited a teenage boy to a park bench. When he arrived, Aguilar attacked him and stole his money.
A 15-Year-Old Shot Four Times
The second case was far more violent.
A 15-year-old boy traveled to the same park to meet Canul. She then led him away from the bench — about a half mile to Aguilar’s apartment.
As the two approached, Aguilar made a loud noise and stepped out while visibly loading a gun.
When the boy tried to run, Aguilar shot him four times.
Despite being shot multiple times, the teenager managed to make it to a nearby coffee shop on his own. Bystanders there called 911 immediately.
He was taken to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Caught on the Phone
Investigators say they caught Canul on a phone call with Aguilar after the shooting — telling him she had gotten rid of the gun used in both robberies.
That conversation became a key piece of evidence against her.
Both Suspects Now in Custody
Aguilar was arrested earlier in the week and faces two counts of aggravated robbery.
Canul was arrested on Friday and is currently detained at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center. She faces two aggravated robbery charges and could face additional charges related to evidence tampering.
Authorities have not released further details on the investigation’s status or whether additional victims may come forward.
This case is a stark reminder of how quickly a conversation on a dating app can turn dangerous — especially for younger users who may not recognize the warning signs.
