Pennsylvania Woman Faked Terminal Brain Cancer, Scammed Community Out of Thousands — FBI Now Hunting Her

A Harleysville, Pennsylvania woman is now a federal fugitive after allegedly pretending to have terminal brain cancer for nearly a year — convincing over 140 people to donate money she secretly used for luxury vacations in Australia, the FBI revealed.

Vanessa O’Rourke, believed to be in her late 30s, is currently wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on charges of wire fraud. Authorities say she told friends, family, and community members in Harleysville that she had been diagnosed with glioblastoma — one of the most aggressive and deadly forms of brain cancer — and needed financial help to travel to Australia for experimental treatment.

She never had cancer. Not even close.

The Scam That Fooled an Entire Community

According to the FBI, the alleged fraud began in October 2015. O’Rourke claimed she urgently needed funds for life-saving treatment abroad. Her community responded with overwhelming support — a GoFundMe campaign raised nearly $12,000, and a separate in-person fundraiser was held at a local restaurant in her honor.

What happened next shocked investigators. O’Rourke did travel to Australia in April 2016 — but the FBI says she spent her time there enjoying leisure activities and received absolutely no medical treatment. She reportedly made a second trip to Australia, again vacationing rather than seeking any care for her “nonexistent illness.”

Federal Charges and a Fugitive on the Run

O’Rourke was charged in May 2018 with 15 federal counts of wire fraud in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Authorities believe she has since fled the country and is most likely back in Australia.

The FBI is actively seeking information on her whereabouts and is urging anyone with knowledge of her location to contact their nearest FBI field office or American Embassy.
