A quiet Memorial Day turned deadly in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, when a gunman opened fire in a supermarket parking lot, killing a grandmother and seriously wounding a teenage worker.
Allen Prince, 27, of Missouri, is now behind bars facing first-degree murder charges after the shooting at Cosentino’s Price Chopper on Missouri Route 7 — about 30 miles southeast of Kansas City.
The Victims
Amy Coon, 45, a mother and grandmother from Pleasant Hill, was shot while standing beside her own vehicle after shopping. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Amy’s not just a victim,” said Pleasant Hill Police Chief Tommy Wright. “She was a daughter, a mother, a grandmother — someone who cared deeply for her family.”
A 16-year-old store employee named Ayden was also shot twice while retrieving shopping carts from the parking lot. He is currently in the ICU at Children’s Mercy Hospital in stable condition.
“This was his first job. He just started in March,” his mother said.
What Happened
The shooting began just before 4:30 p.m. Prince used a bolt-action Winchester .243-caliber rifle. When two armed citizens moved toward him, Prince turned the gun on himself. He survived and is currently receiving medical treatment.
“Two gentlemen had the courage to approach this suspect and prevent further violence,” Chief Wright said.
Prior Warning Signs
Court records show Prince was already under a no-firearms bond condition from a September 2025 harassment case — where a family member alleged he threatened to “blow her head off.” He was due in court June 3.
Coon’s death is Pleasant Hill’s first homicide in over 20 years.
