College Athlete Dies in Texas Crash — His Uncle Reveals the Dreams That Were Taken Too Soon

A 19-year-old college athlete and military trainee was killed in a Texas car crash last week, leaving his university, hometown, and family devastated.

Sam Musgrave, a cross-country runner at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in San Antonio, died on the night of May 28 in Sanger, Texas. Two high school students were also hospitalized in the crash.

Who Was Sam?

Musgrave had just finished his first semester at UIW and completed basic training with the Texas National Guard.

His uncle, Evan Vasquez, described him as someone who lit up every room.

“He was loved by everybody,” Vasquez said. “Anybody he came in contact with, he made friends with.”

Musgrave had big plans ahead — running cross-country, owning a business, and serving his country and family.

“Unfortunately, that was taken from us,” his uncle said.

What Happened?

The Sanger Independent School District confirmed the crash involved three cross-country runners. Musgrave, a 2025 Sanger High School graduate, died at the scene. Two current Sanger students were injured and hospitalized.

Full details of the crash have not been released. The family says the lack of answers has made grieving even harder.

“It’s just been grief added by the lack of information,” Vasquez said.

Tributes Pour In

UIW’s track and cross-country program remembered Musgrave’s smile, saying it “lit up every room.”

Teammates and friends flooded the team’s Instagram with memories.

“Absolutely one of the best humans I’ve known,” one wrote.

Another shared: “I would go to my brother’s basketball games with no one to talk to. This guy would sit and speak with me the entire game. That’s love, that’s kindness.”

How to Help

A GoFundMe for Musgrave’s family has already raised over $18,000 — surpassing its $15,000 goal — to help cover funeral and memorial costs.
