A Hawaii man was charged with murder after a dayslong manhunt ended when police found him hiding in a small cave.
Jacob Daniel Baker, 36, of Pāhoa, faces one count of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder in the killings of three men on the Big Island.
He was arrested Thursday in Kalapana after an officer spotted him ducking in a field. He fled before being found in a cave nearby.
The three victims:
- Robert Shine, 69 — found partially submerged in a pond, died of strangulation
- John Carse, 69 — found 19 miles away, died of sharp-force trauma
- An unnamed 79-year-old man — found with suspicious injuries
All three were killed in the Puna District within two days. Shine and the unnamed man lived just 400–500 feet apart.
Baker is held without bail on the murder charges. He is also charged with burglary, auto theft, and other offenses. His first court appearance is scheduled in Hilo District Court.
Police have not revealed a motive. The investigation is ongoing.
