NORTH CANAAN, Connecticut — A man lost his life Saturday after his kayak capsized in a private pond in the state’s Northwest Corner, according to a state official.
Emergency crews were called to the pond after reports of an overturned kayak in the water.
James Fowler, a spokesperson for the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, confirmed that the victim was pulled from the water and that life-saving measures were attempted on scene.
Despite those efforts, the man was pronounced dead.
What We Know About the Incident
Fowler confirmed that the man was the only person in the kayak at the time it capsized.
The victim has not been publicly identified, and no further details about the circumstances leading to the capsize have been released.
The incident took place on a private pond, though officials have not named the specific location beyond the North Canaan area.
Investigation Now Underway
The death is currently under investigation by DEEP’s Environmental Conservation Police.
Authorities have not yet indicated whether weather conditions, equipment failure, or any other factor contributed to the kayak overturning.
Updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
Kayak Safety on Local Waters
Kayaking accidents can happen quickly and without warning, even on calm, private ponds.
Water safety experts consistently point to a few key factors that can mean the difference between a close call and a tragedy:
- Always wear a properly fitted life jacket, even on short or familiar trips
- Never kayak alone — always go with at least one other person
- Let someone on land know your plans before heading out
- Avoid kayaking in low visibility or unstable weather conditions
A Reminder for the Community
Incidents like this serve as a sobering reminder that no body of water should be taken lightly — no matter how calm it looks or how experienced a paddler may be.
Authorities have not released the victim’s name pending family notification. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
