NORTH PLATTE, Nebraska — The last weekend of spring is not going out quietly.
Severe storms are sweeping across the Southern Plains, and forecasters are warning that Saturday could bring the most dangerous conditions of the entire stretch.
Millions of people from Texas all the way to Montana are in the path of this system — and many may not realize just how serious it is.
Friday Already Brought Warnings Across Texas and Oklahoma
Storms kicked off across Texas and parts of Oklahoma on Friday, carrying the risk of small hail and damaging wind gusts.
A level 2 out of 5 severe storm threat was issued stretching from the bottom tip of Kansas, through western Oklahoma, and down into west Texas — from Amarillo all the way to Fort Stockton.
A broader level 1 out of 5 threat covered parts of Colorado, Wyoming, and Kansas as well.
For many residents across these areas, Friday was just the opening act.
Saturday Is When Things Get Serious
Forecasters say storms will become far more organized on Saturday — and the focus shifts north.
Western Nebraska and South Dakota are now in the crosshairs, with areas like North Platte and Rapid City sitting under a level 2 out of 5 severe storm threat.
Storms are expected to fire up in the afternoon and grow stronger as they push east — giving communities very little time to prepare once they form.
A level 1 out of 5 threat stretches across the entire Plains corridor, from Texas all the way up to Montana.
Large Hail, Damaging Winds — and a Tornado Threat Too
The main dangers for Saturday are large hail and damaging winds.
But forecasters also confirmed a small tornado threat exists.
Even a “small” tornado threat is not something to brush off — especially if you are outdoors, on the road, or in a mobile home during afternoon hours when storm activity is expected to peak.
What You Should Do Right Now
If you live anywhere across the Plains this weekend, here are the steps to take before storms arrive:
- Check your local weather alerts before heading outside Saturday afternoon
- Charge your phone and have a backup battery ready in case of power outages
- Know where your nearest sturdy shelter is — not just your car
- Stay away from windows if storms roll through your area
- Keep an eye on local emergency alerts — conditions can change fast
Do not wait for the sky to turn dark before you act. By then, the storm may already be on top of you.
The Last Weekend of Spring Comes With a Price
Spring often ends with a storm — and this year is no exception.
The Plains have seen volatile weather throughout the season, and this weekend’s system is a reminder that severe weather does not wait for a convenient time.
Stay weather-aware, check in on elderly neighbors, and keep your family informed throughout the day Saturday.
