Southwest Philadelphia, PA — A 13-year-old boy is fighting for his life after a car struck him while he was riding his bicycle Thursday night in Southwest Philadelphia, police confirmed.
The crash occurred around 7:45 p.m. at the intersection of Island Avenue and Lindbergh Boulevard — a busy crossing in the heart of Southwest Philly.
According to Philadelphia police, the driver of a Ford Fusion was heading northbound on Island Avenue when the vehicle struck the teen, who was riding his bicycle westbound on Lindbergh Boulevard and crossing through the intersection at the time of impact.
Emergency responders rushed the 13-year-old boy to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where he was listed in critical condition, authorities said.
The driver of the Ford Fusion remained at the scene following the crash and cooperated with authorities.
Philadelphia police have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the crash. No arrests have been announced at this time.
The incident has left the local Southwest Philadelphia community shaken, as the area around Island Avenue and Lindbergh Boulevard sees regular foot and bicycle traffic from neighborhood residents.
