Cops Pulled Him Over for an Expired Sticker — What They Found in His Car Led the FBI, ATF and Bomb Squad to His Front Door

It started with an expired registration sticker. It ended with the FBI at the door.

Louisiana State Police troopers pulled over a vehicle on Lincoln Beach Boulevard near Lamb Road in New Orleans East after spotting the expired sticker. Behind the wheel was James Thomas, 41, of New Orleans — and what troopers uncovered in the next few hours would turn a simple traffic stop into a full-scale federal investigation.

A search of Thomas and his vehicle immediately raised red flags. Troopers recovered a loaded firearm and $849 in cash from his person. But that was just the beginning. Inside the car, authorities discovered a stash that stopped everyone in their tracks: six half-sticks of suspected dynamite, along with suspected fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and multiple prescription-grade narcotics including morphine, dextroamphetamine and amphetamine pills.

The moment explosive materials were confirmed in the vehicle, Louisiana State Police called in reinforcements. The Criminal Investigations Unit, the Emergency Services Unit, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation all converged on the scene.

Police also found packaging materials commonly associated with drug distribution — a clear sign, investigators said, that Thomas wasn’t just using. He was selling.

The investigation didn’t stop at the car. Armed with a search warrant, authorities moved to Thomas’ residence — and what they found inside was even more alarming. Eight firearms were recovered from the home, including two confirmed stolen weapons and two illegal firearm suppressors. Another $900 in cash was seized. Investigators also found suspected white-powder fentanyl, a blender with fentanyl residue still inside, and more drug distribution packaging.

Thomas now faces a serious list of charges, including illegal possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to distribute, and transactions involving drug proceeds — charges that carry significant federal prison time.

What Happens Next: Louisiana State Police confirmed the investigation remains active and that additional charges are possible. With both the FBI and ATF involved, federal charges could follow — meaning Thomas may be looking at far more than a state-level case.

All of this because of one expired sticker. Somewhere in New Orleans East, a neighborhood just got a little safer — and a very dangerous man is off the streets.
