A routine Tuesday night at a Southern California laundromat turned into a deadly tragedy when a black SUV tore through the front wall — and someone inside never made it out.
Nobody walks into a laundromat expecting it to be the last place they’ll ever stand. But for one person in Manhattan Beach on Tuesday night, that’s exactly what happened.
A vehicle — later identified as a black SUV — crashed through the front of Coin-Op Laundry, located in the 900 block of Aviation Boulevard, killing at least one pedestrian inside. The Manhattan Beach Police Department confirmed the fatal crash and immediately launched an investigation.
Witnesses who were near the scene told reporters what police had not yet officially confirmed: a person who was struck by the SUV inside the laundromat did not survive. The victim has not been publicly identified, and their family has yet to be notified.
Aerial footage captured from above told a brutal story — the black SUV had driven completely through the laundromat’s glass front, coming to rest inside the building surrounded by shattered debris. Officers from the Manhattan Beach PD were seen fanning out across the area, beginning what is expected to be a lengthy investigation.
“A vehicle crashed into a laundromat… a person struck by the vehicle inside was killed.” — Witness accounts from the scene
As of now, no arrests have been confirmed in connection with the crash. It remains unclear whether the driver stayed at the scene, fled, or was injured. The circumstances that led the SUV to jump the curb and barrel into the building are still under active investigation.
What happens next: Manhattan Beach Police are expected to release further details as the investigation develops, including the identity of the victim and whether any charges will be filed against the driver. Surveillance cameras in and around the laundromat are expected to play a key role in piecing together exactly what happened in those final seconds.
A person went in to wash their clothes and never came home. Someone is responsible — and right now, investigators are working around the clock to find out who.
