A family outing at a popular Alabama nature preserve turned fatal Saturday when two siblings went underwater in Turkey Creek and did not come back up. Their mother was standing nearby on the creek bank when the tragedy unfolded around 4:02 p.m.
The incident took place at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, located at 3906 Turkey Creek Road in Pinson. Deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were the first on the scene, quickly joined by crews from Palmerdale Fire and Rescue, Center Point Fire and Rescue, and Glenwood Fire and Rescue.
Nearby residents also joined the search. After the children were located, they were transported immediately to UAB Hospital — but it was too late. Both siblings were later pronounced dead.
“The Jefferson County Greenways community is mourning the tragic loss of life… We want to express our deepest sympathy to the family, friends and everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss.”
Turkey Creek Nature Preserve announced it would close for the remainder of the day — both out of respect for the victims and to allow staff time to process the tragedy. The park thanked first responders for their “tireless efforts” during the response.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the drowning. Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward.
