GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A former financial officer with a local veterans organization has been arrested after authorities accused him of misusing association funds for personal expenses.
According to investigators, William Schultz was taken into custody last week following an investigation into the handling of money belonging to the Central Gwinnett Veterans Association.
Schultz previously served as the organization’s quartermaster, a position responsible for overseeing finances, paying bills, and managing purchases. Authorities said concerns were raised after reports surfaced that association funds may have been improperly used.
During the investigation, detectives discovered that Schultz allegedly wrote four checks to himself and labeled the transactions as loans. Investigators also allege that he took cash from the organization’s funds and used it for personal expenses.
As a result, Schultz has been charged with four felony counts of theft by taking and one misdemeanor count of theft by taking.
Officials have not disclosed the total amount of money allegedly involved in the case. The investigation also has not determined how long the alleged misuse of funds may have been occurring before it was reported.
The case remains under investigation.
