Fort Myers Chef Killed on Tennessee's Deadliest Motorcycle Road — 'He Was My Everything'

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A beloved Fort Myers restaurateur has died after a motorcycle crash on one of America’s most dangerous roads, leaving behind a grieving family, a tight-knit community, and a legacy built on food, family, and love.

Mariano Luis Maldonado, 55, died on May 19 while riding as a passenger on Tennessee’s Highway 129 — famously known as the “Tail of the Dragon” — inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, about 50 miles outside of Knoxville.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the driver, 59-year-old Eduardo Falcone, drifted into the wrong lane while navigating a sharp right turn and struck an embankment. The Harley-Davidson Tricycle flipped into oncoming traffic. Both men died from their injuries.

It was supposed to be an adventure trip. Just two friends hitting the open road.

Maldonado was no ordinary traveler. Born in Argentina, he immigrated to the United States in 1996 and built something truly special in southwest Florida. In 2011, he and his wife Rocio Navarrete opened El Gaucho Inca in Fort Myers — a restaurant blending Peruvian, Argentinian, and Italian flavors — and went on to open several more successful businesses together.

His wife’s words, posted on social media, stopped many in their tracks.

“He was not just my husband — he was my best friend, my protector, my confidant, my life partner,” Navarrete wrote in Spanish. “He always made you laugh and made you feel loved.”

His children remembered him as creative, observant, and always ready with a joke and a warm welcome — even for strangers.

The stretch of highway where the crash occurred has claimed 19 lives since 2021, according to the Blount County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities continue to warn riders about its 318 curves packed into just 11 miles.

Maldonado is survived by his wife, five children, and three siblings.
